Gang of burglars jailed for Manchester crime spree
A group of 17 burglars are jailed for a total of 45 years for their one-year burglary spree
A gang of 17 people have been jailed for a total of 45 years following a year-long burglary spree carried out across south Manchester and Cheshire.
Following a major police investigation, 17 members of the organised crime gang have been caught and convicted in Manchester Crown Court, including one of the gang’s ringleaders.
The group of thieves broke into 49 properties, including homes and businesses, throughout south Manchester and Cheshire in the space of just one year, stealing valuable and personal items.
Police launched Operation Ingot to tackle the problem and were able to target the gang. Officers raided property connected to the group and seized stolen valuables worth more than £250,000 in total, including expensive watches, bikes and cars. Police also seized items under the Proceeds of Crime Act. Some of the stolen items were returned to their owners.
Some of the burglary victims were allowed to accompany the police on their raids and watched as the heartless criminals were taken away in police vans.
One of the ringleaders, aged 25, pleaded guilty to multiple offences and was jailed for three years and four months, while another accomplice, aged 26, was handed a suspended 18-month jail term.
Chief Inspector Derek Hewitt, of Wythenshawe Integrated Neighbourhood Team, commented: “Police, along with our partners, have worked tirelessly on this operation to stamp out the organised crime that was corroding the community.”
